Department of Dramatics at Chittagong University held the 4th annual theatre festival at CU recently.
The three-day festival titled ‘4th Barshik Natya Utsab 2020’ featured twelve plays, cultural shows, felicitation ceremony, debate and others at two venues namely the Open Stage and Zia Haider Studio. Vice-chancellor of Chittagong University Shirin Akter inaugurated the festival. State minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid was present as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, presided over by Chittagong University dramatics department chairman Shamim Hasan.
On the opening day of the festival, Chittagong University dramatics department’s 2nd year students staged the play titled Birth of Bangladesh. Besides, CU dramatics department staged Joibati Kannyar Mon, Moho Bhongo, Pujar Saaj and others. The second day of the festival commenced with cultural performances by Chittagong University-based cultural organisations Angan and Lokoj Sangskritik Sangathan. Dhaka-based theatre troupe Upstage staged Raat Bhore Brishti while CU dramatics department staged Rashtra Banam, Shonar Tori and Banshi. On the concluding day of the festival, artistes of Chittagong University-based cultural organisation Chhayatoru rendered songs. Besides, Dhaka-based theatre troupe Shunyan Repertory Theatre staged Lal Jamin and Chittagong University dramatics department staged three plays namely The Frogs, Nishkriti and Shymaprem.
The department also honoured Dhaka University theatre and performance studies department professor Israfil Shahin and Jahangirnagar University drama and dramatics department professor Afsar Ahmed with ‘Muktir Chetonai Shilpita Shirjan 4th Barshik Natya Utsab 2020 Sammanana’ for their contribution to theatre scene. ‘This was the fourth annual festival arranged by us. We wanted to evaluate our students through the festival, which provided a platform for them to showcase their talent. Besides, the festival also gave them the chance to compare themselves to professional theatre activists,’ Shamim Hasan told New Age.
