Mobile court punishment draws flak as elderly men humiliated

Netizens and locals have expressed their anger and dissatisfaction with the punishment a mobile court in Jessore has handed down to three elderly men for not using masks amid the coronavirus outbreak. The mobile court led by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sayma Hasan conducted a drive in different areas in Monirapur upazila on Friday afternoon.
During the drive, she asked the three elderly men, including a van driver and a vegetable vendor, at Chinatola Bazar to hold their ears with hands in public as punishment. She also captured a photo of the punishment. Her photo capturing moments with the humiliated elderly individuals went viral on social media later and drew huge criticism.
Monirampur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ahsan Ullah Sharifi said the matter is very regretful. “She should not have done it. The deputy commissioner has already been informed about the matter,” he added.
