Country’s COVID deaths approaches 24,000

Bangladesh has reported 178 more deaths from Covid-19 in the preceding 24 hours, taking the death toll from the pandemic to 23,988. On the other hand, the overall caseload stood at 14,12,218 as 6,885 more tested positive for the virus during the period. The daily COVID-data was published in a press release signed by Professor Dr. Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) today (Saturday, August 14).

The recovery count rose to 12,81,327 after another 7,805 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the same time, said the DGHS press release. A total of 33,330 samples were collected in the span of 24 hours, yielding the virus-positive rate of 20.66 percent, it added. The DGHS statistics showed the recovery rate at 90.73 percent while the mortality rate stood at 1.7 percent.

Dhaka registered the most daily deaths and new cases among the 8 divisions in the last 24 hours, reporting 67 fatalities and 4,157 fresh virus cases. Chattogram tailed 45 deaths and 1,327 cases followed by Khulna with 23 deaths and 322 cases in the same period. Among the dead, 108 were male and 69 were female.

Earlier, The highest single-day deaths 264 from Covid-19 and 11,164 cases were reported on Tuesday (August 10). On August 5, the same number of people died of the virus. The first Covid-19 cases were reported in Bangladesh on March 8, 2020, and the first deaths from the virus were on March 18.
