7 arrested in capital on charges of extortion

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven people on charges of blackmailing and extortion in the capital. They were arrested from Bashundhara residential area and Dakshinkhan area on Tuesday. The detainees are – Ring Leader Md. Al Mahmud, Mamun, 26, Mastura Akhter Priya, 21, Md. Akram Hossain, Aquib, 20, Tania Akhter, 25, Md. Rubel, 32, Md. Mohsin, 26, and Md. Imran (32).

Noman Ahmed, ASP of RAB-1 Battalion Headquarters, said that a young man of the victim complained to the RAB headquarters that he met a young woman named Mastura Akhter Priya through Facebook on July 10. Then on the evening of August 10, Priya took him to her girlfriend’s house. Priya and her associates Al Mahmud, Mamun, Akram Hossain, Aquib, Tania Akhter, Rubel, Mohsin and Imran took her to a room in the house and filmed her.

Later, they took him hostage and demanded a ransom of Tk 10 lakh from him. They then forcibly collected Tk 1 lakh through bKash and a bank cheque of Tk 4 lakh from the victim. On the basis of this complaint, a team of RAB-1 conducted simultaneous raids in Bashundhara Residential Area and Dakshinkhan area on Tuesday.

The elite force recovered 14 mobile phones, two laptops and secret videos from their possession. During initial interrogation, they confessed to their involvement in criminal activities.
