The World Bank has praised women’s empowerment

World Bank’s outgoing Country Director Mercy Myung Tembon paid a farewell call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganobhaban on Wednesday. PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting. The Press Secretary said the World Bank Country Director said he visited various places in Bangladesh and was impressed by its grassroots development.

Citing the example of a village in Comilla, Tembon said he was happy to see small houses where every family has planted trees and cultivated vegetables in the compound of their house. He lauded the Prime Minister for the Ashrayan project. In this connection, the prime minister said both husband and wife are the owners of the houses given under the project and they are using their land for vegetable cultivation.

Tembon said he was happy to see students and other people involved themselves in harvesting paddy to help farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this connection, the prime minister said the leaders and activists of her party Bangladesh Awami League and its associate bodies have done this out of their political commitments. Regarding women’s development, Sheikh Hasina said the task was not so easy and her government had to face many adversities for this.

Mentioning that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman laid the foundation for women’s development in the country, Sheikh Hasina said her government is implementing various initiatives to ensure equal rights for women following in the footsteps of Bangabandhu. He also said that the presence of women in all fields, including sports and employment, has been ensured to remove obstacles to women’s progress. PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus was present on the occasion.
