Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League, on Tuesday night tortured four students at Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall of Dhaka University suspecting them activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir. The incident took place three months and a half inside torturing to death Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, by Chhatra League leaders at BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall.

The four tortured students were identified as Sanawer Hossain, a third year student of political science, Mukim Chowdhury, a second year student of tourism and hospitality management, Minhaz Uddin , a second year student of Islamic history and culture, and Afsar uddin, a second year student of Arabic. Witnesses said Chhatra League leaders and activists took the four students to the hall’s guest room and tortured them from11:00pm to 1:00am with iron rods, hammer and sticks. They said that hall union vice-president Saifullah Abbasi Ananta, general secretary Towfiqul Islam, assistant general secretary Surap Mia, hall unit Chhatra League joint secretary Amir Hamza, organising secretary Shahin Alam, vice-president Anwar Hossain, Kamal Uddin Rana were among torturers.

‘Chhatra League leaders interrogated the students and pressurised them to acknowledge their involvement with Shibir but as they denied, the leaders amplified the amount of torture’, said one of the witnesses. The hall provost Delwar Hossain said the university proctorial body and the hall administration handed over the four students to Shabagh police station around 2:00am. All of the four students were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. Police released them on Wednesday afternoon, said officer in charge of Shahbagh police station Abul Hassan. The injured students told reporters that they were not involved with Shibir. Chhatra League leaders forcefully took them to the hall guest room and tortured them, they said.

The university proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said on information members of proctorial body went to the hall and rescued the students. The proctorial team then handed them to Sahbagh police station. Chhatra League central president Al Nahian Khan Joy said that he heard that four students were handed over police for their alleged involvement with Shibir but did not know anything about torture and would not support any kind of physical assault.
Meanwhile, Student Unity against Violence, an alliance of 12 student organisation held a protest rally on the campus protesting at the torture and demanded immediate punishment of the torturers. Addressing the rally, Dhaka University Central Student Union vice-president Nurul Haque Nur said, ‘Despite the vice-president of DUCSU, I came under attack by the Chhatra League goons several times then where is the security of general students’.

Demanding resignation of the university proctor, he said, ‘The proctor is much more dangerous than Chhatra League. He utterly failed to protect the general students rather he incited the attackers.’ Meanwhile, one of the victims Mukim Ahmed began sit-in at Raju memorial monument protesting against the torture on him.
He said that he submitted a written complaint with the university proctor and would continue the sit in until the torturers were punished. Asked if the university would take any action against the attackers, proctor Golam Rabbani said they would take actions if anyone violated the rules and regulation of the university. Chhatra League leaders of BUET had also tortured Abrar Fahad in the same style suspecting him an activist of Shibir. Later, the BUET authorities expelled 26 students for their alleged involvement in the murder in the face of massive protest.
