An arrest warrant has been issued against Bangladesh’s only Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus in a case filed over illegal sacking of employees in Grameen Communications. Dhaka 3rd Labour Court Chairman Rohibul Islam issued the warrant on Wednesday. Three employees of Grameen Communications filed three separate cases against its Chairman Dr Yunus and Managing Director Naznin Sultana, and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin. In the cases, they accused the trio of sacking them illegally for their role in formation of trade union at their workplace.
The accused were asked to appear before the court on October 8. Confirming the matter, court’s Bench Officer Nuruzzaman said: “Dr Yunus did not appear before it in due time, so the court issued the arrest warrant against him.” He said: “Dr Yunus’s lawyer Raju Ahmed informed the court that his client was abroad and he will appear before it after returning to Bangladesh.” Meanwhile, the court granted bail to Naznin and Abedin when they appeared before it and sought bail. Grameen Communications, however, does not have any link with Grameen Bank.
